Life Insurance 101: Term vs. Whole vs. Final Expense

Life insurance comes in many shapes, but most people only need to understand three: term, whole, and final expense. Each one is designed for a different season of life and a different goal. Here's how they compare and who each is built for.

Term life insurance

Term life covers you for a fixed period — typically 10, 20, or 30 years — and pays a death benefit if you pass away during that window. It's the most affordable kind of coverage because it's temporary and builds no cash value. A healthy 35-year-old can often get $500,000 of 20-year term for less than the cost of a streaming subscription.

Best for: Younger families covering income replacement, a mortgage, or kids' future expenses during peak earning years.

Whole life insurance

Whole life is permanent. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy stays in force for the rest of your life and pays a guaranteed death benefit. A portion of every premium also builds cash value you can borrow against or surrender later. Premiums are higher than term, but they never increase, and the policy is locked in regardless of future health changes.

Best for: People who want lifetime coverage, want to leave a legacy, or want a conservative cash-value asset alongside their other savings.

Final expense insurance

Final expense is a smaller whole-life policy — usually $5,000 to $25,000 — designed to cover funeral costs, medical bills, and other end-of-life expenses. Underwriting is simple, often with no medical exam, and many policies are guaranteed-issue for older adults.

Best for: Seniors who want to spare their family the burden of burial costs and don't need a large death benefit.

How to choose

The right policy depends on what you're protecting and for how long. Many families use a combination — for example, a large term policy while the kids are at home, plus a small whole-life or final expense policy that follows them into retirement. An independent broker can show you quotes from multiple carriers so you're not stuck with one company's pricing.
